In Pennsylvania, a head on crash on a highway on Saturday killed six people. The accident happened in a national forest and the six who died included two children.

In the Allegheny National Forest, which is in northwestern Pennsylvania, Kathy Douglas, 36, was driving an SUV on the highway road. In her vehicle were Jarrett Costanzo, 6, Olivia Douglas, 12, and her 10-year-old son. Costanzo and Douglas were killed and Kathy Douglas and her son were injured.

There were four others in the other vehicle who were killed. Gary Beimel, 62, was driving the sedan. Beimel’s wife Elaine, 55, David Cuneo, 54, and Florence Donachy, 81, all of St. Marys. Police in McKean County said that for some reason the SUV crossed over the centerline and hit the sedan which was approaching in the opposite direction.

The condition of the boy has not been made public but a spokesperson at the hospital where Kathy Douglas is being treated said on Monday that she remains in serious condition.

Stephanie Renwick, who is a resident of St. Marys and a neighbor of the Beimels said that they would be missed. “They were wonderful people. They were good friends and wonderful neighbors.” Renwick’s husband has also worked with Gary Beimel and he related that the Beimels had a large family and were close.

Olivia Douglas was a cheerleader at Kane Area Middle School. She had many friends, worked hard, and was very dedicated. Friends will remember her for her smile, her giggle, and her good attitude.

Jarrett Costanzo, was a student at Kane Area Elementary School and was on the wrestling, football, and Little League baseball teams. His wrestling coach, John Nystrom, said that Jarrett loved competition. He did not hesitate to compete against boys who were much bigger than him. According to Nystom, the boy could even take him down in practice. He’d then say “Get up, Coach!”

There was a candlelight vigil for the two victims at the football field at the Kane Area Middle School on Sunday. Over 300 people were in attendance and many of them wore their cheerleader outfits or football jerseys.
